* Exploring Racial Inequalities in Dance
Following the autobiography and career of Misty Copeland, we will explore the racial inequalities of dance in America.  We will discuss reasons for the dominance of ballet and modern dance, and how changes can be made to increase diversity in our studio classes and performances.  Our group will meet virtually once a week for a lively discussion of Copeland’s book, Life In Motion, video review of her dance works, comparisons to other culturally relevant dancers, and brainstorming of positive ways we can make a difference in racial inequality through dance.  All students grades 6-12 are welcome and National Honors Society Dance Association (NHSDA) points will be awarded for participation.

The New Studio of Dance, the official school of the Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre, is committed to providing a world-class dance education to students of all ages, experience levels and backgrounds. ACDT and the New Studio of Dance are proud to provide the highest level of teaching staff at the school, and to be able to host quality artists, teachers and performers from around the world.

We are celebrating 48 years of dance in Asheville. The New Studio of Dance was founded in 1970. It is the school of Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre, which performs regionally and abroad. The school prides itself in taking the novice dancer through the many stages of technical and artistic development to perform at a professional level in this culture and abroad.

The New Studio of Dance is also used by ACDT to train future professional dancers who will be included in ACDT and/or who choose a performance career somewhere else in the world. The Junior Company consists of a group of students in high school and middle school who are receiving world-class training and numerous performing and choreography opportunities. The members of ACDT’s Junior Company play a large part in creating their own dance program and on occasion apprentice to Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre. All the teachers at the New Studio of Dance are well trained, professional, and inspiring.

The Junior Company Pre-Professional Program and the Tween Company Program are designed for the serious to a professional career. The classes are taught in a series of workshops of various dance forms to train a well-rounded artist dancer. The classes are taught by members of ACDT, and will include workshops in Modern, Ballet, Jazz, Partnering, Theater, Voice, Improvisation, Composition, and Choreography.
Junior Company and The Tween Company are by invitation only.
